What is llms.txt — and does my hotel need it?
The walkthrough
Adding one is a genuinely small job — the discipline is keeping it accurate. Here's the whole process:
Know what it is — and isn't
llms.txt is a convention: a markdown-formatted text file at your domain root that summarises your site for AI systems. It is not a ranking lever, not paid placement, and not a substitute for the verification and trust work. It's a courtesy to machines that makes your site easier to digest.
Write the file
A heading with your hotel's name, a short factual summary — what you are, where you are, who you suit — then a list of your key pages, each with a one-line description: rooms, location, FAQ, dining, policies, contact.
Cover what travellers actually ask
Prioritise the pages that answer real questions — the FAQ, the location page, the family or accessibility information — over press releases and brand fluff. The file's job is routing machines to your most quotable content.
Publish it at the root
The file must live at yourdomain.com/llms.txt — anywhere else and nothing will look for it. Anyone who can upload a file to your website can do this; no development work involved.
Keep it current, alongside the fundamentals
An out-of-date llms.txt is worse than none — it's you formally telling AI systems the wrong story. Update it when your site changes, and remember it complements schema, a clean robots.txt and a crawlable site rather than replacing any of them.
How The GEO Agency fixes it — and keeps it fixed
AI answers change week to week, which is why a one-off audit decays the moment it ships. GEO for Travel tracks what the engines actually say about your hotel, continuously, and hands your team the plan:
- Tracked live, weeklyYour hotel checked across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity against ~50 real buyer questions for your market.
- Every competitor namedEvery rival the engines recommend instead of you — named, counted, uncapped.
- A brief on every gapEach missing answer becomes a content brief with a paste-ready prompt your team can ship the same day.
- Human-checked, alwaysEvery report reviewed and signed off by a human before it reaches you — on every plan, from £495/month.
The questions that come next
Do the AI engines actually read llms.txt?
Adoption is uneven and still settling — it's a young convention, not an enforced standard. The honest case for it: near-zero cost, no downside when accurate, and it positions your site well as machine readership grows.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No — they're complementary. robots.txt is about permission: what crawlers may access. llms.txt is about comprehension: helping AI systems understand what your site contains and where the substance lives.
Can llms.txt hurt anything?
Only if it's wrong. An accurate file is at worst ignored; a stale one feeds machines misinformation with your name on it. Keep it truthful and current and there's no downside.
Do I need a developer to add it?
No — it's a text file. Anyone who can edit your website can write it and upload it in half an hour. The thinking (what to include, how to describe yourself plainly) is the real work.

From the Founder
“Everyone is selling tools. No one has the tool and thirty years of global brand expertise to deploy it. That’s the gap we built for.”
Thirty years inside global brands, watching every digital shift up close. This is the biggest one yet: AI decides the booking before your website loads. That needs someone who’s been in the room, not just a dashboard.
